About the campaign

Public Services Not Private Profit is a joint union campaign launched in March  2006 to defend public services against privatisation and stand up for the rights of public sector workers.

The campaign has the support of 14 national trade unions, several campaigning organisations and dozens of MPs.

Our campaign has led the fight to defend our public services. In June 2006, we organised a mass lobby and rally of Parliament that was attended by over 2,000 trade union delegates - the biggest lobby against privatisation in history. Since then, we have organised numerous local rallies, meetings, debate and fringe events which have been addressed by MPs, trade union leaders and prominent campaigners. Our aim is to put the struggle against privatisation firmly on the political agenda.

Since 1997, New Labour has continued the Tories' drive to privatise our public service. Outsourcing, the Private Finance Initiative and other forms of privatisation are threatened in education, health, the justice system, the civil service, postal services, transport, council housing, the provision of youth services, fire services and broadcasting.

Under a decade of New Labour, more civil service jobs have been privatised than under nearly two decades of Tory rule. Public sector jobs are often replaced by private sector consultants on far higher wages.

Markets have been introduced into education and health care. The proliferation of Foundation Hospitals, Trust Schools and Academies has led to the increasing fragmentation of our public services.

Billions of pounds of public funds are being wasted boosting the profits of private companies who are downgrading services and slashing conditions and jobs for public sector workers. This increased trend towards privatisation puts at risk the accountable and effective delivery of public services.

Furthermore, the Government is imposing pay freezes on workers right across the public sector. At the same time that teachers, nurses, civil servants and police officers are having their wages cuts, boardroom pay and public sector bosses' pay continues to rocket. The disparity between workers' and bosses' pay is the highest that it has ever been.
